Tesla Breaks Ground on Shanghai Gigafactory

Earlier today, Tesla’s Chinese factory broke ground in Shanghai where it will start to build their electric vehicles dedicated towards Chinese consumers. Being the largest market for electric vehicles, it is imperative for Elon Musk to be able to compete against local Chinese EV manufactures that continue to develop, and have the ability to sell their vehicles at a fraction of the price of Tesla thanks to the tariffs placed by the Trump administration.

The “Gigafactory” is also going to be China’s first wholly foreign-owned car plant which reflects China’s attitude to opening the car market regardless of the ongoing trade war with the US. The plant will produce Model 3 and Model Y during its initial phase of production.

“Aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of the year & reach high volume production next year,” tweeted Musk.
