Google Maps Sends Motorist Down A Muddy Path

Admit it – we all have done it at least once in our life as a driver. The voices from our navigational system telling us if we take this detour route, we could save precious minutes and arrive at our destination without being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. We blindly follow what the navigation system tells us – and more times than not, it will get us there without too much fuss.

However there are those times when we begin to talk to our self and ask the navigational systems “Really? Are you sure about this?”.

When an accident occurred on the main road heading towards Denver International Airport (DIA), drivers began searching for an alternative route to avoid the accident and still catch their flights on time. Google Maps offered drivers an alternative route – one that lead them through an empty field where the roads weren’t paved. As an added bonus, the recent rain storms had transformed the dirt roads into a muddy mess which ensnared drivers as they tried to drive through, causing yet another traffic jam. In total, more than 100 drivers were caught in the muddy mess.

Google said in a statement that the company accounts for many factors when determining routes, and noted the dirt road wasn’t marked as private. However, Google did say unforeseen circumstances like weather can cause even more headaches for drivers.

“We encourage all drivers to follow local laws, stay attentive, and use their best judgment while driving.”
